7 Fear Quotes That Will Change How You See Life
I'll speak for all of us here and say "I love a good quote".
I've become a bit of a collector. There's a large document on my computer with all the good ones I've come across over the years. I thought I'd dive into the tickle trunk, and share 7 of my favourite quotes on fear with you today.
PS. I don't have any of these tattooed... yet.
1. "The cave you fear to enter hides the treasure that you seek." - Joseph Campbell
Joseph Campbell was an American professor of literature specializing in mythology and religion. He studied stories, and how our impressions of the world are build upon them.
You hear version of this quote over and over again throughout history. And it is the essence of what I believe in, and what we talk about on this channel. Freedom, Success, and Happiness are hiding behind the areas of your life you are scared of most.
2. “If you hear a voice within you say “You cannot Paint”, then by all means paint! And that voice will be silenced” - Vincent van Gogh
Most notably known for “The Starry Night”, Vincent van Gogh was a dutch post-impressionist painter, and one of the most famous artists in history.
This quote follows the same vein as above. We often tell ourselves we’re not good at things, or “that just isn’t for me”.
By doing this, we manifest that limit. Have you maybe thought you’re not good at it because you simply haven’t practiced?
Would you still be bad at cooking or swimming, if you actually took lessons, and tried? Probably not. It’s a self-limiting belief.
3. “The fears we don’t face become our limits” - Robin Sharma
Robin Sharma is a Canadian writer, best known for his The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari book series. Sharma worked as a litigation lawyer until age 25, when he self-published MegaLiving, a book on stress management and spirituality.
If we’re scared of confrontation, public speaking, solo travelling, and we avoid these situations… They become the bars of the cage of our prison.
4. “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom” - Anaïs Nin
Anaïs Yin was a French-Cuban American novelist and writer of short stories, and erotica.
I love this quote because it explains my story, and the story of so many others. Very rarely does change happen comfortably on a lazy Sunday afternoon, we have to break and rebuild. The pain of staying still must be greater than the pain of change. And we Blossom.
5. "Fear is for people who don't get out much" - Rick Steves
Rick Steves is an American travel writer, and television personality.
The more you stay home, listen to the news, the gossip, the rumours of others… the more you catch their fears, and become infected. The people out in the world, experiencing, enjoying, and waltzing with the risks of everyday life are the happiest, and most stress-free. I love these words.
6. “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” - Frank Hebert.
Franklin Herbert was an American science-fiction author best known for the 1965 novel Dune and its five sequels. In 2021, this universe will all be adapted to film. Which, I'm pretty excited about.
These words personally have had the most effect on my life. I had adapted my own mantra from them, reciting it before every time I walked on stage and felt scared. Feel the fear, and let is pass through. On you will remain.
7. “Never refuse an invitation, never resist the unfamiliar, never fail to be polite, never outstay your welcome, just keep your mind open, and suck in the experience, and.. if it hurts? It's probably worth it” - Alex Garland
Alexander Garland is an English writer and filmmaker. He wrote a novel “The Beach” which was later adapted into my favourite travel film.
These words are spoken as a voice over as the protagonist finds himself in the middle of a faraway land, spellbound by all the strange sights and sounds. It embodies my thoughts on travel, fear, and leaping into new experiences. People ask me how I have so many good stories. This is why.
These are my favourite 7, what are yours?
